Excursion urban and regional development in Vienna and surroundings summer semester 2021

Vienna is the "benchmark" for urban development and housing policy in Europe. It is also often regarded as a role model in matters of local transport, open space and cultural policy. In many global rankings for urban quality of life, Vienna occupies one of the first places. Obviously, after a period of decline during the division of Europe, it has succeeded in combining strong economic and social dynamics with social balance and sustainability-oriented strategies in an extremely densely populated city over the last two decades. Vienna is also trying to build on its tradition of municipal social housing of the 1920s and 30s with the new projects. This successful model was to be visited and discussed during the six-day excursion in September 2021 to the Austrian capital and its surroundings. 19 students learned more about urban and regional development in Vienna and Lower Austria through a varied program. On site, many aspects of urban and regional development were discussed in talks with representatives of the provincial and city administrations, civil society and academia. In addition, the intensive interdependencies of the federal state of Vienna with its surrounding region in Lower Austria were considered.

The excursion Vienna took place under the leadership of Prof. Rainer Danielzyk, Prof. Axel Priebs and Dr. Nora Mehnen.
