The Rhine shapes the cultural landscape in the region and Cologne.

Integrated urban and regional development

Under the claim of sustainable development, the Cologne / Bonn region is also preparing for the major social, economic and ecological challenges of the coming years. In May 2013, 22 students were able to experience the Rhineland approach to integrated urban and regional development with all their senses during a 5-day excursion together with Martin Sondermann, Meike Levin-Keitel and Prof. Dr. Rainer Danielzyk. A special focus was on various projects realised within the framework of the REGIONALE Cologne Bonn 2010. The REGIONALE is a structural programme of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia that has received a great deal of attention from international planning experts. Since 1997, municipalities in a region have been able to apply to host the event, which now takes place every three years.

Other focal points of the excursion were the complex demands on urban river landscapes, the orientation and focal points of urban development in the Rhineland, and migration and neighbourhood development at the district level.
