North-east of Berlin, between Eberswalde and Prenzlau, stretches one of the most varied landscapes of the North German lowlands. The Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve encompasses an impressive cultural landscape with hundreds of lakes, a richly structured field system and the largest contiguous lowland beech forests in Central Europe. Organic farming is practised on a good third of the agricultural area and with its species occurrences, the biosphere reserve is one of the "hotspots" of biodiversity in Germany.

In May 2015, 20 students were able to experience the diversity of the biosphere reserve during a five-day excursion. Together with local speakers, the topics of agriculture and nature conservation, protected area management, compatibility of nature conservation and tourism, and water ecology were addressed. The research aspect was not neglected either, with a visit to the ZALF (Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research).

Prof. Dr. Christina von Haaren, Prof. Dr. Michael Reich, Sarah Matthies and Birte Bredemeier were part of the excursion management team.
