Abstract

Many rural areas in Germany are affected by demographic change and the resulting complex challenges. Furthermore, individualised living environments, increased mobility requirements and the transition to flexible labour markets mean that more and more people (have to) divide their lives between two or more places. Accordingly, the affected places are characterised by the temporary presence and absence of residents. This paper focuses on multilocal ways of life in the rural district of Diepholz and the resulting effects in the areas of housing and civic engagement in the research region, the Diepholzer Land. Based on the opportunities and challenges associated with multilocal lifestyles, the spatial and socio-political relevance of the phenomenon and the approaches developed to deal with it are explained.
