Biodiversität in urbanen Räumen fördern

Abstract

Urban areas hold important potential for contributing to biodiversity protection. Yet, pressures such as soil sealing and intensive land use reduce this potential and threaten existing biodiversity. This article gives an overview of biodiversity-promoting measures in urban areas in Germany and, based on a literature review and a survey, examines the implementation and the effectiveness of two selected measures: nature-friendly green space management and the protection of open spaces. The results show that extensive management practices such as suitable mowing techniques can make an effective contribution to urban biodiversity conservation, though their application remains limited. A similar pattern emerges for the protection of open spaces such as brownfields. Overall, the results indicate that although a wide range of measures are available to promote urban biodiversity, their implementation must be intensified in order to successfully counteract the decline in biodiversity.
