Kurzbeschreibung

Short description

The Mediterranean basin has been identified as an important area for global biodiversity conservation. Agricultural intensification and the great climatic changes, that are likely to occur in the future, pose a threat to the supply of Mediterranean agro-ecosystem services and the development of a sustainable and resilient agriculture.

The international research project LEGU-MED aims to put forward an international and well-integrated plan to valorize legume agrobiodiversity in biodiversity-based farming systems and consequently enhance agroecosystem functions and services in the Mediterranean basin. The research activities aim to increase ecosystem services while maintaining soil fertility, minimize the use of synthetic chemical compounds, and maintain a satisfactory and steady income for growers. For the latter, LEGU-MED will use a participatory process where a subset of stakeholder’s community will be involved in the co-creation of innovative solutions.

The Leibniz University Hannover team is working on the subproject “models and approaches for a biodiversity-based agriculture in legume-based farming systems” with the aim to develop new spatially concrete models. This should allow a simple assessment of agrobiodiversity and different ecosystem services at patch and farm level using as few data and field surveys as possible.  By projecting the effects of different legume-based cropping and management methods on the agro-ecosystem, the model results can also assist farmers in choosing and planning their cropping practices, thus enhancing and promoting agro-biodiversity and the supply of ecosystem services (i.e. provisioning, regulating and cultural) in the Mediterranean basin in the long term. The models will be developed and calibrated in collaboration with the research activities of our international partners and will include a broad range of different typical biophysical conditions in the Mediterranean area, local farmers’ know-how as well as socio-cultural and socio-economic assessments. The project uses lentils and chickpeas as models for all grain legumes in the Mediterranean area.
