On 3 July 2024, an excursion took place in the Hanover region for students on the Master’s programme in ‘Environmental and Regional Planning’. Led by Dr Wolfgang Jung (lecturer) and Honorary Professor Dr Axel Priebs, the group set off by bicycle from Seelze S-Bahn station and visited key sites relating to urban development and renewable energy in regional planning.
The first stop was the Seelze Süd district, where the group discussed its development history and ambitions as a ‘waterfront district’. The group then visited the StromNetzDC information centre to learn about the planning and implementation of the SuedLink underground cable project and toured the construction site of this key infrastructure for the energy transition.
In the priority area for wind energy use near Ronnenberg-Vörie, the focus was on the importance of wind turbines and the challenges of land-use planning. The area underscores the Hannover region’s goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2035, whilst at the same time being a project that is highly controversial among the public. The excursion concluded with a joint visit to a beer garden in Bennigsen, providing an opportunity for reflection.
The excursion enabled participants to explore key issues and solutions in the fields of urban development and renewable energy through concrete examples in the region, and to link academic content with practical insights.
