Successful Launch of the 'BioWoQ' Research Project to Promote Biodiversity in Residential Neighborhoods

BioWoQ aims to enhance biodiversity in residential neighbourhoods through behaviour-based strategies, addressing the growing challenges of the global biodiversity crisis. The transdisciplinary research project is funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) and realized in collaboration with the housing companies hanova Wohnen GmbH and KSG Hannover GmbH. Additionally, the project receives expert support from the Environmental and Urban Greenery Department of the City of Hannover and the Insect Alliance Hannover.

Led by Prof. Dr Ann-Kathrin Koessler, the BioWoQ project centres on behavioural changes and participatory planning of biodiversity-promoting measures in real estate. The focus is on the behavioural science analysis of incentives and barriers to such measures, particularly on properties owned by housing companies. These rental estates represent a significant portion of urban space and hold substantial potential for biodiversity conservation. However, they have been considerably underrepresented in the prioritization and implementation of biodiversity measures. This oversight represents a missed opportunity, as the natural redesign of residential complexes offers significant potential for synergies benefiting both people and the environment. Through behavioural change strategies and participatory planning with residents, BioWoQ will contribute to both the protection and promotion of biodiversity and the improvement of living conditions for the residents.

We are excited about the successful launch of the BioWoQ project and the positive impact we can achieve together moving forward.
