The state government has appointed the members of the new Climate Council for Lower Saxony. Among them is Prof. Dr. Ann-Kathrin Kößler, Professor of Environmental Behaviour and Planning at the Institute for Environmental Planning at Leibniz University Hannover (LUH). The newly established committee will support the state government in implementing climate protection measures that are practical, socially balanced and scientifically sound. The measures evaluated and proposed by the Climate Council will also be discussed with citizens.
“I am very pleased to be part of the new Climate Council for Lower Saxony. The council offers the opportunity to systematically strengthen the dialogue between science, politics and practice. Sound research results form the backbone of any effective policy design — at the same time, we must listen to the voices of those directly affected by the sustainability transformation. When evidence-based decisions are linked to the experiences and realities of local stakeholders, ambitious, feasible and effective measures can be developed,” says Ann-Kathrin Kößler.
The Climate Council comprises 15 members, six scientists from different disciplines and nine association representatives. The chair is elected from among the scientists and operates independently. The Climate Council's recommendations are then supplemented by those of randomly selected citizens. These recommendations, from scientists, associations and citizens, are published once a year and submitted to the state parliament and government.
