A new commentary in Nature Ecology & Evolution, “Key lessons from 50 years of Germany’s impact mitigation regulation for biodiversity offsetting,” takes stock of five decades since Germany pioneered what is now known as biodiversity no net loss. Amid growing political pressure, the authors argue the regulation is more essential than ever, while calling for targeted reforms and a systematic evaluation of its overall effectiveness.

The piece synthesizes what has worked well and what needs improvement, offering clear lessons to guide future policy and practice toward biodiversity net gain. Internationally, Germany’s approach remains surprisingly little known; the authors hope this contribution will help raise awareness and inform similar efforts worldwide.
