Prof. Kleinschroth gave a lecture on the role of cities and built infrastructure in the global biodiversity crisis at the founding of the Alliance for Biodiversity of the Hanover Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
The Alliance for Biodiversity brings together companies that want to promote biodiversity. Accordingly, around 30 representatives from small, medium-sized and large companies as well as associations from the Hannover region took part in the event. Hannover Wholesale Market, the host of the event, has invested heavily in the promotion of biodiversity on its premises in recent years and therefore provided an appealing setting for the event.
In his presentation, Prof Kleinschroth emphazised why the global extinction of species cannot be solved within cities, but why it is nevertheless important to promote urban biodiversity. He referred to the global loss of habitat, which is indirectly linked to domestic industry via supply chains and directly through land sealing. The near-natural greening of company premises is therefore not enough, but is nevertheless an important step towards promoting urban biodiversity. Employees and visitors learn about ecological relationships and so-called nature-based solutions are created, for example in water management, which are otherwise often provided by built infrastructure.
