On 22 May 2026, partners and stakeholders of the HorizonEurope SpongeWorks project gathered in Trikala for the 2nd Technical Meeting & Geodesign Workshop, co-designing the future “Sponge Strategies” for the Pinios River Basin. The workshop was organised by e-trikala SA - Municipality of Trikala, Soil & Water Resources Institute, ELGO-DIMITRA & WWF Greece together with the Leibniz Universität Hannover team and PASECO SP LTD.
Building on the results and discussions of the 1st Technical Meeting, this workshop marked an important next step: moving from the exchange of ideas to shaping a common, realistic and actionable vision for the region. The participants worked together to refine and improve the developed scenarios, connect them to the real landscape through spatial mapping, and define shared directions for the next stages of implementation.
The vision emerging from the workshop is one of a river basin that is:
- more resilient to floods and droughts,
- better managed in terms of water resources,
- rich in healthy soils and strengthened biodiversity as well as
- supported by practical solutions tailored to local conditions and needs.
From scenario reviews and collaborative planning exercises to discussions on synergies, conflicts and indicators, the meeting showcased the value of cooperation, innovation and local engagement in building climate resilience. The strong participation, productive dialogue and creative spirit throughout the day made the meeting a great success and an important milestone for SpongeWorks in Greece!
