- Abstract
Various scientific proposals now exist for transitioning towards a climate-adapted landscape. Opinions and experience from practitioners regarding these proposals were gathered through online surveys (N=99) and stakeholder discussion groups (N=9), considering area and cost assessments. The study shows that practitioners from administration and other stakeholders do not question the need for action. Key challenges identified were land availability and financing measures. Compensation measures can be an initial pragmatic way to implement and finance climate adaptations if this is prepared through landscape planning guidelines. Site pools and Special Areas of Conservation can form the foundation for further strategic action. However, due to the scope of the task and the resulting costs, increased government funding is needed. From a practical perspective, the extent to which new financing avenues should be explored through the private sector is still highly controversial. The EU Nature Restoration Law could now bring more momentum to implementation if the currently largely unresolved financing is secured. Even if new funding sources become available, the need for prioritization is emerging. For practical and financial reasons, it will probably not be possible to preserve all habitats in their current form under climate change.
